Christmas is coming...!

This year`s Christmas treeis looking good, all ready for tomorrow night`s switch on. Pudsey In Bloom were happy to help out once again this year and provide a home for the annual Christmas tree. Well done to Pudsey business group for getting it in place. Hope tomorrow night goes with a swing and is well supported.

A most welcome donation!!

Last week members of Pudsey in bloom were delighted to accept a cheque for £1000 presented to us by the Masons. The photograph below shows Margaret our chair along with some of our members accepting the cheque from the Worshipful Master of the Lodge of Benevolence. The lovely photo was taken by Peter Holdsworth, the Masons photographer. Afterwards we were honoured and pleased to be treated to a visit to the Masonic Hall on Church Lane, it was a super afternoon. The money will be used to provide attractive planters in the library square.

September Update

The  Asda sponsorship plaque is now in place in the leisure centre bed. The sleeper beds at lowtown are well on their way to being completed. We almost were an outright winner in the Asda green token collection, but in the end were beaten by Rodley Nature Reserve, none the less we bagged ourselves £50 for entering! We are now in possession of a bowser and are trying out a watering schedule to see how it will work, unfortunately we have been asked by LCC to water the trickiest areas, mainly the troughs at the main traffic lights in the town centre! Work still continues by our tidy Tuesday group, don`t forget our AGM in October, and I dare I say it will soon be time to plan for the autumn/spring planting of the troughs!

Article in the Winter Edition of the P&DCS.

There is an interesting write-up on the history of Job Ross and his tripe business in the latest edition of the Pudsey Civic Society magazine. What they have omitted to say is that without our Maureen, the tripe baths would no longer be with us!!

Helpers from Southroyd School

Recently we had some welcome helpers from Southroyd School holiday club. We all had a lovely morning and the children left just before the rain started. They were enthusiastic and fun to work with as well as being very well behaved. They worked with us in Sparrow Park and helped with weeding, deadheading and bulb planting. We hope to have their help again in the October half-term.

SouthRoyd School Gala

Thanks to everyone who helped raise £21.50 for our funds at the weekend by taking part in our `Name the gnome` competition. We are pleased to say that the gnome has now found a home! The winning name was Humphrey and he was taken home by a happy Southroyd pupil, whose grandma promised to help look after him :-)

And just to show that it`s not all work, work, work!!

Time for a welcome cuppa:

Money well spent, and thanks to Asda.

Sandra Deakin from Asda came to see the finished work on the leisure centre bed that has been made possible by money donated through Asda sponsorship. We took the opportunity for a photo shoot. A plaque will soon be in place to acknowledge the support of Asda with this fantastic project.

Replanting has started....

Today we started to replant the troughs with summer bedding, the plants will take a while to settle in but hopefully with a little bit of summer sun (if we are lucky! )  they will soon be putting on a colourful display, there was even time for a cuppa!

On the way back to the car, I took a snapshot of the colourful displays in the library beds:

If you are interested in getting a close up read of all the information on our travelling display boards, then at the moment you can view them in the library on the mezzanine floor. So why not go along and take your time to read all about our work, it may be just the encouragement you need to join the group.

It`s a tough job...but it has to be done!

The annual job of emptying all the troughs and planters in readiness for summer planting has begun in earnest. Our small group of volunteers could really do with a helping hand at this time of the year, it`s a true saying that `many hands make light work` so if you have free time any Tuesday morning, you will be most welcome to join us. The plan this year is to empty all the barrier troughs of the small shrubs which are becoming a bit too established, remove the bulbs to dry out, and check the soil is in good condition for replanting. Here are the shrubs from just five of the troughs potted up and ready for us to find a new home for them:

And some of the bulbs drying out in a sunny porch:

And now a bit of `me time` to work on my own garden:

Carnival Fun.

Enjoyed our day at the carnival, despite the wind! Thanks to everyone who bought tickets for our raffle, we managed to raise £54. All winners have now been notified, but if anyone has problems getting their prize then please email: pudseyinbloom@gmail.com.
We are hoping to make lots of new friends with our campaign to launch  `Friends of Pudsey In Bloom`. Hopefully we will get some response from the numerous leaflets collected from us on the day.

An interesting photo.

I noticed that someone had posted an old picture on facebook of what would have been Job Ross`s old tripe premises at the edge of Lowtown Garden, truly fitting then that his old tripe preparation baths are now situated here, thanks to a joint effort from ourselves and the civic society to preserve them, thought you might be interested to see this old photo, I don`t think this is the original building but it definitely pre-dates the one there now:
